Generation of Computer from 1st to 5th

Computer is a man-made electronic machine. The Computer word comes from the word compute which meaning is to calculate and process the data logically. And today, we all know what a computer  is, right? This machine helps us with our daily tasks and makes our lives much simpler by performing multiple tasks at once. Where we the human beings takes longer time to calculate and process the data this machines performs very fast saving our hours every day. In today's world, computer does so much more than our expectations. But before we dive deeper into how it works, let’s understand its history and how this technology has developed over time.

The history of computer technology starts in the early 1800s. It all started when a mathematician named "Charles Babbage" came up with the idea of a machine that could be programmed to do mathematical calculations. Although his idea was groundbreaking, it took many years for it to come to life. In fact, it wasn’t until almost a century later that the first electronic computers were built.

His vision was ahead of its time, and even though he couldn’t build a fully functional machine himself, his concept inspired future generations of scientists and engineers. Over time, other inventors improved upon his ideas, eventually leading to the creation of the computers we use today. The journey from Babbage’s sketches to modern-day technology is a perfect example of how innovation builds on past ideas. Without his work, the technology we rely on every day might have looked very different! The First Generation (1940-1956) - 

The first electronic computers were developed during the 1930s and 1940s. The Atanasoff-Berry Computer (ABC), created by John Atanasoff and Clifford Berry in 1937, was the first electronic computer. However, the ABC was not fully functional and could only perform simple calculations. It was the Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer (ENIAC), developed by J. Presper Eckert and John Mauchly in 1945, that is widely considered to be the first fully operational electronic computer. ENIAC was a massive machine that weighed over 30 tons and used over 18,000 vacuum tubes to perform calculations.

The Second Generation (1956-1963) - 

The second generation of computers saw the development of the transistor, a smaller, more reliable replacement for the vacuum tube. This led to the development of smaller, more powerful computers. In 1954, the IBM 650 was introduced, which became one of the first mass-produced computers. Other notable computers from this era include the IBM 7090 and the DEC PDP-1.

The Third Generation (1964 -1971)- 

The third generation of computers saw the development of the integrated circuit, which allowed for even smaller and more powerful computers. The IBM System/360, introduced in 1964, was one of the first computers to use integrated circuits. This era also saw the development of time-sharing systems, which allowed multiple users to access a single computer simultaneously. This paved the way for the development of the first computer networks.


The Fourth Generation (1971-1989) - 

The fourth generation of computers saw the development of the microprocessor, a single chip that contained all the components of a computer’s central processing unit (CPU). This led to the development of even smaller and more powerful computers, including personal computers (PCs). The first PC, the Altair 8800, was introduced in 1975. This era also saw the development of the first graphical user interfaces (GUIs), which made computers more accessible to non-technical users.

The Fifth Generation (1989-Present) - 

Fifth generation of computers are characterized by the development of artificial intelligence (AI) and natural language processing (NLP) technologies. Technology of this generation developed day by day.  This era has seen the development of powerful supercomputers and the creation of the internet, which has revolutionized the way people communicate and access information. This generation computer system revolutionizes the future of computing by making systems more intelligent through the use of NLP & AI, self-learning capabilities, learning from mistakes, expressions, and experience. 

This era has also seen the development of smartphones and other mobile devices, which have become ubiquitous in modern society.

5th Generation - Personal Computer


The history of Computer technology has been marked by continuous innovation and evolution, from the earliest mechanical calculators to the sophisticated machines of today. The development of Computers has transformed nearly every aspect of modern life, from the way people work to the way they communicate and entertain themselves.
